CONTENT

Research is a crucial part of any design process. In order to make design decisions during this process designer needs to obtain knowledge and data which are not at hand immediately. This class aims at introducing the importance of research and methodologies to you. During the class you will be informed about different roles of research in architecture and urbanism as well as various methodologies and techniques of how to collect and select needed data. You will experience the process of research and quest to find answers to your questions. During this journey to find answers, you will experience the importance of asking and adjusting the right question, which will steer your journey of knowledge creation.

During this class you will learn to synthesise your thoughts and knowledge about a certain subject into a clear hypothesis and main question to be answered. This question will then be transformed into a research design. Research design is a strategy of how to obtain needed knowledge translated into a single model of questions, methodologies and techniques.

Important to mention is that the goal of research is not only individual expansion of knowledge but also has important social and scientific-al implications. It is not only you that should profit from your quest but also your peers, colleagues, people you serve in your practice. Therefore it is important to communicate your findings in a clear, appealing and structured way.

LITERATURE

What is architectural research?

Architectural Research: Three Myths And One Model; RIBA’S Research and Development Committee

Architectural Research Methods; Linda N. Groat, David Wang

Design Research: Methods and Perspectives; Brenda Laurel

RESULTS

A written research design proposal reflecting the research proces, questions, methodologies. A written research report of the conducted research and application of research methodologies with answers to the sub-questions and main conclusions.

A reflection report on how the student is going to use/apply research results in his/her design project.
